FOUR adopts the stacked format and tilted letter "O" of Indiana's LOVE image, which first appeared in a series of rubbings that the artist sent to friends as Christmas cards. The artist painted three FOUR canvasas in three different different color combinations; the combination of yellow, red, black, and blue is also seen in two of his early LOVE paintings. Indiana also painted a ZERO canvas using this stacked format, however the letter "O" is not tilted in this work.
FOUR was exhibited in Indiana's first solo show in Los Angeles, at the Rolf Nelson Gallery, and was most recently seen in Parma, Italy, at the Fondazione Magnani-Rocca in Lichtenstein and American Pop Art.
