Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

This journal page covers November 2–4, 1960. Indiana's entry for November 2 includes a sketch of a work (The Triumph of Tira), which he notes had originally been Image of Man (an abstract work that he painted over). To the left of the sketch he records the addition of raw sienna danger stripes and circles, the same as those of the "tall vertical const[ruction]" (Marine Works). He also notes that he took someone named Judy to meet Jack Youngerman, and left them to discuss their future together. He comments that Judy had never particularly liked Youngerman's work, but returned that evening saying that she saw some pieces in his studio that she liked.

Indiana mentions Judy again in his entry on November 4, noting that she came to Scarsdale (where Indiana taught art classes) to pose. He also records receiving a call from Bertha Schaefer and a job offer in her gallery, and that Chuck [Charles] Hinman and Jim Rosenquist moved in overhead in Agnes Martin's old place (3–5 Coenties Slip).
