Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

Indiana's journal page for May 23, 1961, includes a sketch of Wind, a 12 by 11-inch painting, with a note that the work went to the Durkees (Steve and Barbara). The artist also records sanding (wood for his sculptures), and that he received a note from gallerist Rolf Nelson confirming that his herm Moon has been selected by the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
