Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

In his journal entry for May 18, 1961, Indiana records that art critic Gene Swenson was buying Stephen Durkee's Clock from "Paul's show" (Premiums: Stephen Durkee, Robert Indiana, and Richard Smith). He then notes that he left his loft not knowing when Charles Hinman would be delivering the "garden sculpture" (Moon) from the David Anderson Gallery (where it had been on display in Indiana / Forakis), and that he went to the duck pond for what was "a comparatively easy day." Indiana writes that J. (his partner, fashion designer John Kloss) was fixing dinner when he returned, and that Hinman and Peter Forakis delivered his sculpture late, noting "policeman on beat eyed 'Moon' being carried in, said 'hello,' and passed on."
