Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

In his first entry on this journal page, dated March 25, 1959, Indiana describes his visit to French and Company to see the Barnett Newman show (Barnett Newman: A Selection, 1946-1952). He records that to his good fortune, Newman was in the gallery, and guided him through the show. Indiana also notes that Newman failed to recognize him.

The second entry, for March 25, 1960, includes a sketch of the herm The Virgin, with the work's medium (metal and gesso on wood) and dimensions (39 ½ x 11 ¼ inches). There is also a note, added at a later date, stating that the work was lent to gallerist Rolf Nelson in 1961 and returned in 1962.
