Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.
In his journal entry for March 21, 1961, Indiana records that it was a beautiful spring day, and that he picked up posters (for the exhibition Premiums: Stephen Durkee, Robert Indiana, and Richard Smith), "much suffered in printing." He writes that he met J. (his partner, fashion designer John Kloss), Stephen and Barbara Durkee, and Richard Smith for dinner at Sloppy Louie's, and that they returned to his loft to fold and address exhibition announcements.
Indiana also records two phone calls, one from a friend wanting a loan, and another from gallerist Rolf Nelson, who informed him that a joint show with Peter Forakis was set (at the David Anderson Gallery) and would be opening April 1. Indiana writes that he broke the news gradually to his cohorts.
