Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily activities.

This journal page covers March 20, 1959, and March 20, 1960. Indiana's entry for March 20, 1959, indicates that he added white to two different works. He also writes: "painted today on both Homasote compositions, my excursions into color." He is referring to Source I and Source II, which he was preparing for a photo session on Saturday (see Journal page for March 19, 1959, and March 19, 1960).

In his journal entry for March 20, 1960, Indiana records that his loft was clean and in working order again, and that actress Delphine Seyrig came over for a fitting (by Indiana's partner, fashion designer John Kloss), and "was very delighted with her suit." He continues: "She noted my work, and said again I should show, and asked what I was doing about it. I said [that] I was waiting for a sign."
