Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

In his entry for June 24, 1961, Indiana records that J. (his partner, fashion designer John Kloss), left early for a beach day with their friend Daniel, a "very sad choice, for it became cold and rainy." He writes that he re-stretched Electi, and later joined Kloss at Daniel's new place on upper Third Avenue for dinner and to meet his new dog, "the baby dachshund." Indiana notes that his two paintings (Upharsin and Tekel ["Brothers" Odd Fellows], in their early states) had just been hung, and that Kloss had rearranged the furniture.
