Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

In his journal entry for July 16, 1961, Indiana records applying gesso to four canvases, and giving the cerulean blue of Year of Meteors a second coat. The entry also includes a sketch of the circle from The Fair Rebecca, with notes added at a later date indicating that the work went to the gallerist Rolf Nelson, and then to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
