Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.
This journal page covers December 15–16, 1959. Indiana's entry for December 15, 1959, consists of a sketch of a work titled Anniversary Painting. He records the work as being oil on canvas, yellow and cobalt blue, and measuring 40 by 38 inches. A note added at a later date indicates that the work was painted over.
