Robert Indiana kept a series of illustrated journals during the late 1950s and 1960s, in which he discusses the development of his work as well as his daily life on Coenties Slip.

His journal entry for April 16, 1962, is dominated by a color sketch of the sculpture Two, with a comment at the top of the page stating "rework a long dormant construction." A comment to the right of the work, added at a later date, notes that the work was in the artist's collection.
